The First Step In Buying A Home
It’s the common question asked in every area of life – “how do I start?” In fact, just last night, I hosted a small business incubator and you know what the consistent question was – “how do I get started?” So, today, let’s answer that question.
Many articles will say the first step is to connect with a mortgage lender to get pre-approved for a loan to determine how much you can afford. Now, if you do start with a lender that is a great place to begin; however, I believe your true first step is to engage with a recommended real estate agent. Your real estate agent should know the best mortgage lenders and can make a warm connection for you to the right lender while helping you make sure the amount you are approved to spend will actually fit within your budget.
Think of your real estate agent as a quarterback. Their job is to execute the play and make sure the right person (whether the mortgage lender, lawyer, home inspector, etc...) has the ball when they need it. You want the quarterback to be the first one touching the ball because they know where it should go and can guide you through the process.
At the end of the day (and for that matter the beginning of the day and middle of the day) a real estate agent is your advocate. Your advocate with the mortgage lender, your advocate with the seller whose house you want to buy, your advocate through the entire process. You want your advocate with you every step of the way so start with your advocate.
Ask your friends or coworkers who they know that is a great real estate agent. Connect with that agent, meet with them, and make sure they are a good fit. The right quarterback can lead a team to a lot of victories but the wrong quarterback causes many unnecessary losses. Make sure you find the right quarterback who will lead you where you need to go.
