How Can I Save Money When Selling a Home?

Listen along!

The Maroon Group Podcast

First, let’s rewrite that question into something that is easier to control – how can I maximize my profit when selling a home?

The truth is, the best way to save money on selling a home is to sell it “For Sale By Owner” since you save the commission for paying the agent who would represent you on the sale. That being said, statistics show the average for sale by owner makes 19% less on the sale of their home when they do not have an agent representing them. So, you “saved” money but really took a loss since you sold it for less than you would have.

The best way to “save” money is to have a great negotiator representing you who can craft ways to keep you from having significant home inspection repair bills or from paying a buyer’s closing costs, etc… It’s those pieces along the way that can add up to a lot of savings but again, focus on maximizing profit.

A good real estate agent can make you a lot more money since they know the right things to do to prepare your home for sale. They know how to maximize the minimal work you do to make your home more appealing. They know what the market is looking for and can cater to the buyer market, generating more interest and, therefore, maximizing your sale price. This step-by-step gives you the upper hand in negotiating.

Keep in mind, you get what you pay for so if you do not pay for a professional agent to help, though you are “saving” money, you may ultimately be losing money by not having that real estate agent help you maximize your sales price.
