Are Real Estate Prices Negotiable?
The easy answer is – everything is always negotiable. The better question is – in the current market, how likely is it to negotiate the price? But let’s get back to the matter at hand. Every single piece of a contract is negotiable. A good real estate agent knows how to maximize each piece of a contract for you. The price can be negotiated down; the price can be negotiated up. Certain furniture could stay; certain costs could be covered by one side or the other; a closing date could be changed, literally almost anything.
The craziest story came all the way from California. A homeowner trying to sell on his own was struggling to find a buyer. When he finally found a buyer, the buyer told him he was more interested in the seller’s dog (a rare breed) than the home, and he would only buy the home if the seller left the dog too. The seller needed to move, and so he reluctantly agreed. The dog stayed.
Now, we do not advise our clients in Hampton Roads, Virginia, to ask for the family pet, but the point is, anything can be negotiated. Find a real estate agent who is creative and willing to go to bat for you on each part of the contract.
